It's been a year of super-flops (basically anything Disney had anything to do with, including a release this past weekend), and underwhelming releases (like MI:7), so the fact that a movie about Barbie will save Hollywood is a bit weird.
But that's what its doing as its already the 3rd highest grossing movie of the year after being out only 10 days. $775 million world-wide with no signs it's going to slow down soon.
BARBIE will be just the 2nd movie to crack a billion this year, with MARIO BROS being the 1st (which kinda tells you about where people's hearts are right now).
It's the first movie to gross more than $90 million in its 2nd weekend of release domestically - just a huge hit.
Not so huge is yet another Disney flop in the form of HAUNTED MANSION, a re-make of the Eddie Murphy version released 20 (20!) years ago. It managed only $33 million world-wide gross despite its reported $150 million budget, plus perhaps another $50 million in ads (or more).
Which means as of right now, the movie's lost something like $175 million, which in Disney terms almost counts as a success.
Not a big surprise that a Halloween movie that no one wanted a remake of in the first place would bomb, but that's what Disney does now - burn huge piles of cash that would make the Joker say, "Dude, I like anarchy but come on...."
