Mrs Torrence is back at the Overlook Hotel for good as Shelly Duvall has died at age 75.
She'll always be remembered for THE SHINNING of course, but was in a slew of movies including POPEYE, ANNIE HALL, TIME BANDITS, and NASHVILLE. She hosted an SNL episode and appeared on several other TV shows.
She won a Peabody Award and nominations for a BAFTA and two Primetime Emmy Awards.
But it's THE SHINNING that both made and break her, as it made her famous forever, yet apparently broke her spirit entirely. In the behind the scenes doc, it was pretty clear Kubrick hated her, and Kubrick did his best to break her down.
Which of course he did. It might be hard to believe, but THE SHINNING was considered a flop at the time of release (much lower budgeted horror movies like FRIDAY THE 13th and HALLOWEEN made more money and cost far less), which combined with her shattered nerves and the other big budget flop she was the co-star of (POPEYE), essentially meant the end of her career.
None the less, she will always be remembered for being in one of the freakiest movies ever made.
RIP
