Hollywood is losing money hand over fist, and has been for nearly 2 decades. A combination of the rise of youtube/tik tok, video games, plus ever worsening product has pushed numbers ever lower for some time now.
But that slow march to irrelevancy has picked up pace with truly awful movies and the destruction of once beloved franchises.
As bad as it's been, this year might prove to be the death blow to Hollywood as literally every single big budget movie not named DUNE has flopped badly. THE FALL GUY was a giant bomb, despite two well-like stars. PLANET OF THE APES has only managed a $300 million world-wide gross, meaning it's lost money.
But perhaps the best example of how bad casting and silly over-wokeness has destroyed Hollywood is FURIOSA which has completely shit the money bed grossing a mere $32 million over the long holiday weekend, the lowest grossing#1 movie on Memorial Day in 3 decades.
Worse for producers, it only grossed another $32 million for the rest of the world.
Considering the budget for the film plus ads is something in the area of $200 million, it means that FURIOSA has lost something like $170 million at this point. It'll make more when it goes to Bluray and VOD, but it's a pretty sure bet that it will never break even.
For some reason, no one wanted to see a Mad Max movie without Mad Max. Weird, huh? Now the last Mad Max movie was trash as well, but at least had a male protagonist. Not Mel Gibson (God forbid), but at least someone actually believable as an action star in the form of Tom Hardy. But even that meek attempt to recapture what made the THUNDERDOME and ROAD WARRIOR great was too much for George Miller and the even weaker FURIOSA.
Even the normally relied upon to lie it's ass off to protect the studios Variety called this weekend a "wasteland".
When this is coupled with the bloodbath that has been cord-cuttting and the cost of producing content for streaming services, and there is no light at the end of the tunnel.
And that really comes down to one thing - the quality of the movies.
Put another way, 40 years ago Hollywood released INDIANA JONES AND THE TEMPLE OF DOOM, THE NATURAL, ROMANCING THE STONE, 16 CANDLES, POLICE ACADEMY, and FOOTLOOSE to movie theaters.
Anyone of which utterly destroys the dreck being released now.

The movies I listed were just the ones in theaters on Memorial Day weekend.
Other movies from 1984 include SPINAL TAP, REPO MAN, ONCE UPON A TIME IN AMERICA, STAR TREK III, GHOSTBUSTERS, TOP SECRET, GREMLINS, CONAN THE DESTROYER, THE LAST STAR FIGHTER, REVENGE OF THE NERDS, PURPLE RAIN, DREAMSCAPE, CHUD, AMEDADUS, BODY DOUBLE, A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET, THE KILLING FIELDS, MISSING IN ACTION, NIGHT OF THE COMET, 1984, and HOT DOG - THE MOVIE.
But besides that, it was a dead year for movies.
When you compare that list of amazing movies to the absolute dog shit that is coming out now and it's little wonder that Hollywood is circling the toilet bowl of history.

Is it ever. As damning as it gets.
One can hardly imagine better proof that the people running Hollywood are content to destroy it. Indeed, it's looking more and more like they're purposefully destroying it.
To wit, the super genius who green-lit FURIOSA is also the same woman who had determined that all the DC super heroes who are men - like Superman and Batman - will be replaced by women; IE - Batgirl and Supergirl in the next movies.
Who doesn't want to see that? I mean beside absolutely no one.
Apparently George Miller did have a Mad Max script ready featuring - get this - Mad Max, but that was shot down in favor of the current disaster. How fucking hard is it to put Mel Gibson in a leather jacket and have him blasting radioactive dudes in mohawks? Apparently impossible.
At a certain point it stops being bad decisions & oopsies and instead simply becomes bad programing like from the Soviet film system. Films that preach but not entertain. Worse then simple re-treads and sequels, Hollywood seems to actively hate it's own past and the current audience.
People have simply had enough.
And not just here, but everywhere. That FURIOSA could not crack $40 million overseas is a devastating condemnation of the decisions made... decisions which might bring the whole house of cards down.

Furiosa: Yes, yes please! What I, and by extension the entire viewing audience, want is more unattractive, bitchy, Uber-wo-mAns in traditionally male roles!

Now you're on the trolley!
Also, why not cast Chris Helmsworth as the villain - you know, because people just hate that guy!

Yeah, as you already correctly noted; it increasingly looks intentional. Literally slicing your nose to spite your face.

So the disaster of producing a $200 million movie named MAD MAX without the character (but instead a girrrrl boss - how original!) has come to a head - plans for a sequel are now shelved, presumably forever. To be fair to the notion of replacing a grizzled atomic waste-land man with a 90 pound woman wasn't the only idiot idea about FURIOSA.... To wit, THUNDERDOME & ROAD WARRIOR were, at least a little bit, based on the notion of what it would really be like to live in a post-nuclear holocaust world; a world with no law and very few resources. People in those movies fought to the death for gasoline and water. Grittily shot, those movies were essentially vehicles for Mel Gibson to do stunts on cool cars. The cool cars remain, although of course they bare no resemblance to cars that would actually exist (they do in the original trilogy). You'd think there was a never ending supply of gasoline just based on the sheer number of vehicles shown in the last two movies, with 24-7 body shops running night & day. Instead of being 90 minutes of pulp escapism, the last 2 movies are 2 plus hour grinds that replace fun with political statements (silly as that is), and an excuse to spend 2 million bucks on color grading. Nothing to do with what the series is actually based on, nuclear war. But yeah, having no Max plus a girrrrl boss didn't help either. Regardless, the series is now, mercifully, finished for good. Up next for the Hollywood bloodbath is STAR WARS ACOLYTE, which has already been destroyed by fans as ridiculously stupid (the villain respects a character's pronouns, but is still super mean - so scary!). Naturally executive Kathleen Kennedy (who somehow still has a job) has responded to the criticism by attacking fans, calling male fans "misogynists": "I stand by my empathy for Star Wars fans. But I want to be clear. Anyone who engages in bigotry, racism or hate speech … I don’t consider a fan.” Way to go Kathy, that'll get 'em to buy your awesome product! By all means, keep it up. For some reason, people didn't want her to replace Mad Max... but hey, she does have nice dental work and shiny white teeth. Which is kinda weird considering she was born after the bombs dropped.

...And the majority stock holder for Disney just sold all of his investment group's stock: "Nelson Peltz's Trian reportedly sells out of Disney stock at $120 per share, according to source, a person familiar with the matter tells CNBC. Peltz sold all of his Disney stock at roughly $120 a share, the person said, making about $1 billion on the position.
