SOMEHOW, despite companies like Disney losing $2 billion (that's "billion" with a "B") this year alone, studios continue to believe that re-making a beloved classic into something... well, not so classic, will make them money.
THE EXORCIST: BELIEVER again proves that theory wrong as not only has it earned some of the worst reviews of all time, Universal paid $400 million for the rights... before a single frame was shot.
Which means that because it's only grossed some $46 million worldwide, this movie might lose something like $500 million when all's said and done.
There are many reasons for the disaster, primarily being that the film didn't need remaking or re-imagining, and is virtually sequel proof (the only sequel worth its salt is EXORCIST III, made by Peter Blatty). BTW, there were FOUR previous sequels, none of which made money.
But in a close 2nd place is the insane amount of woke-ism in this turd - made by the same people who ruined the recent HALLOWEEN remakes for the same reason. But the sheer level of stupid in BELIEVER is truly stunning, even for a modern Hollywood movie.
If you doubt me, here's sampling of just how stupid a movie can be - these are exact quotes from the flick:
"I never saw the exorcism. They wouldn't let me."
"Why not?"
"My opinion? Because I'm not a member of their damn patriarchy"
------------------------------------
"Why not?"
"My opinion? Because I'm not a member of their damn patriarchy"
------------------------------------
Wait, what? You're damning a "patriarchy" that sacrificed both people sent to help your daughter from certain death (and worse)? There's stupid, and then there's EXORCIST BELIEVER.
The movie also a veritable avalanche of racism and other super fun tropes guaranteed to alienate people who just want to be scared (and not badly preached to). Even Red Letter Media - which does it's best to avoid any mention of woke lest youtube remove their channel - felt compelled to explain just how woke - and radioactively stupid - this movie is.
Well, speaking of "believer" I believe something - I believe Universal will follow Disney into the dustbin of history if they don't quickly rid themselves of Danny McBride (who produced this trash), and quickly bury this movie where no one can ever accidentally watch it ever again.
