A report came out today indicating that Disney has spent over $270 million on THE MARVELS, the sequel to CAPTAIN MARVEL, which means it will have to gross something like $700,000,000 after ads just to break even. Something it's virtually certain not to do....
The original grossed over a billion, largely on the fact that it was the last MCU movie to come out before END GAME and was (falsely) advertised as related directly to END GAME.
A lot has changed in 4 years, not the least of which is the fact that there's no more AVENGERS movies to cover for weaker sub-sequels... which CAPTAIN MARVEL was. No hype for AVENGERS = a whole lot less people interested in this flick (even if it were good).
The sequel looks to be magnitudes dumber/woker, which saying something considering how God awful the original was. You know it's a bad sign when the director of a movie is distancing herself from a flick months before its release date, yet that's exactly what's happening:
"Turns out, when you direct an MCU film, you're still second-in-command to Kevin Feige. The Marvels director Nia DaCosta recently opened up about this in an interview.
Speaking to Vanity Fair for their cover story, DaCosta revealed what working in the MCU is like. She said that The Marvels is "a Kevin Feige production, it's his movie. So I think you live in that reality, but I tried to go in with the knowledge that some of you is going to take a back seat."

Now maybe this is a good thing as DaCosta's previous studio work includes the very bland CANDYMAN remake... and that's it. Feige's resume of course is a little bit stronger... he produced the 3 AVENGERS movies. So yeah....
She's already running from what is sure to be the next millstone money pit for Disney. Despite that I can't blame her - Orson Wells in his prime couldn't save this turd.
Super hero movies are already a bad bet - everyone of them except GOTG III have bombed this year - and a brutally bad movie that is sure to blame fans when they have the temerity to point that fact out isn't going to help much. MARVELS looks to potentially lose more money then INDIANA JONES 5.... staggering if true.
A poster speaks a thousand words... and those words are all "shit":
