WHATEVER chance the live action remake of LITTLE MERMAID had of avoiding losing money died over the weekend as ACROSS THE SPIDERVERSE grossed $120 million domestically, dominating the box office and setting records in the process.
SPIDERVERSE 2 did what only a few films do, grossing a whopping 341% more than the original version did in its opening weekend. That puts it into the rarified air of such movies as TEMPLE OF DOOM, DIE HARD 2, DARK KNIGHT, and AUSTIN POWERS 2.
It's on pace to be one of the biggest animated movies of all time, and would seem to indicate that not all super hero movies are DOA.
LITTLE MERMAID sank to number 2, grossing some $40 million for a total domestic haul of $186 million so far. But that won't be enough to put MERMAID into the black as it's been a disaster overseas, grossing a mere $79 mil.
Lastly, GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY 3 has a 31-day domestic gross total of nearly $323 million, plus another $437 million overseas which means it will actually make a small profit, something very few Disney movies movies have done of late.
