...Seeing as it cost some $300 mil to make and market, the $118 mil it grossed over the weekend ain't near enough to make it's money back.
It grossed an even more disappointing $68 mil overseas, although some countries - like Japan - haven't begun showing it yet.
But when you compare that to FAST X's $400 mil in foreign box office over the past 2 weeks, and you begin to see how un-popular the live action remake is.
Which means that at this point, barring some sort of unusual staying power at the domestic box office, the best Disney can hope for is breaking even down the line thanks to VOD, DVD, and merch sales.
GUARDIANS 3 has been the only relatively bright spot for Disney as it just crossed the $700 mil mark worldwide, but as it cost some $300-350 million to make & market, it means it's only broken even, with almost no chance of it crossing the billion mark. It'll end up making some money, but nowhere near what other MCU flicks have done in the past.
With ANTMAN QUANTUMANIA also flopping earlier this year, GUARDIANS 3 breaking even, and the looming disaster of INDIANA JONES 5 still to come, it's looking like a cruel summer for Disney.

Not to mention the fact that the film itself is apparently a giant steaming pile of hot garbage. Another movie that falls into line with this weird tendency to make movies super long now, for no good reason.
I watched the video the other day and I was surprised to learn that the original Little mermaid clocked in at 86 minutes. That is cruising along. That movie managed to absolutely dominate the box office the entire year it was out. I should know because I was working at the movies at the time and we had multiple sellouts per day.

It's almost an hour longer than the cartoon version, coming in at a whopping 2 hours and 15 minutes. That's in part b/c of 3 new songs, and of course, a mile's worth of CG artist names during the end title sequence. Of course the really big change is the casting of a black woman in the part that was originally white. As to why the main character was race-swapped when none of the others were - including the main villain - is up for speculation, but doing so did nothing to help the story or make the re-make any better.
Considering that the last 4 STAR WARS movies, the latest Indiana Jones movie, STRANGE WORLD, LIGHTYEAR and ANTMAN QUANTUMAINIA, were also saddled with woke characters/stories, and Disney looks to be paying a mighty big price for their ideals as those films have all been boat anchors.
And I do mean big. STRANGE WORLD alone lost something like $200 million.
And did you know just released a re-make of PETER PAN as a live action movie too? It's been out for a month now, but it too is a giant flop - Disney won't release the numbers of just how much it lost, but at least it "fixed" the "problematic" issues of the original cartoon and first live-action remake.
While LITTLE MERMAID's unmotivated by story need race-swap doesn't appear to have affected the American box office much, it does seem to have played a factor in the horrific ticket sales overseas.
It's something Disney must have anticipated being a problem as it race-swapped the Chinese movie poster, not that it did any good as it looks to be a complete bomb in China....
...As in it's only sold $13,000 worth of tickets so far. Not $13 million, 13 thousand. In other words, LITTLE MERMAID is the worst flop for a big budget American film ever in China. Now whether that's due to racism, the false-advertising, or the fact that the movie is by all accounts nowhere near as good as the original version, it's an unmitigated bomb in China.
Perhaps it's for the best that Disney is running out of cartoons it can re-boot as live action films.
They might be foreign, but they're not blind

'Member how I said Disney was very willing to lose money for it's "principles"?
Well, I'm guessing this will help speed things along as Disney is now hiring men with mustaches and putting them into princess outfits:
At least he's wearing sensible shoes.
Oddly enough, it turns out that a lot of people seem unwilling to spend hundreds (if not thousands) of dollars to have their children exposed to a man pretending to be a princess and are promising never to return to Disneyland.
Who could have guessed?
