Melinda Dillon Dillion - one of those characters actors that you could recognize immediately, but never really remember the name of - has died as age 82.
She made a name for herself in the '70's and '80's in some of the greatest movies of all times - SLAT SHOT (she's the newly turned lesbian who sleeps with Paul Newman), ABSENCE OF MALICE (again w/Newman), CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE 3RD KIND (she's the woman who loses her kid to alien kidnappers, and later travels with Richard Dryfuss), and of course as the mom in CHRISTMAS STORY.
She was always a good looking, pretty, woman, but never quite beautiful enough to be a star. But she was "girl next store" enough to seemingly always be working in something. She was nominated for best supporting actress for CET3K and for the Tony award way back in 1963 for her work in the first production of "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?"
