Meh - faux throwback style flicks very gimmicky. The Tarintino/Robert Rodriguez grindhouse movies have aged very badly.
Ditto that a lot of the faux 80's style movies that have come out, all the way up to STRANGER THINGS. I can see being influenced by 70's & 80's horror movies, but to imitate the technical limitations of the time period makes very little sense.
Also, horror is getting very played-out. A huge number of flicks/shows have come out since THE WALKING DEAD became a hit 12 years ago. Some of them have been great, but most have been somewhere between God awful and "meh".

And when Tarantino did it, neither he nor Rodriguez actually tried to make it LOOK like it was shot in 1972. I am wondering if movies themselves are played out? Maybe the result of having TOO many choices? TOO much "product"? Even if it IS good, it's hard for things to stand out that DON'T have a gimmick.

Yeah, not so sure that's true... of course, compared to the dreck that's come out in the past 10 years, GRINDHOUSE looks like CITIZEN KANE:

Might as well be 1987, such has been the downturn in watchable movies.
