IF THERE was ever a movie that didn't scream out for a re-make (much less a woke one), WEST SIDE STORY would be high on the list.
For one, non-cartoon musicals are high risk propositions, with HAMILTON being the one exception to the rule.
2nd, a film featuring singing, happy go lucky gangs doing battle on city streets seems wildly out of touch as real roving gangs of thieves ravage stores across the land as the murder rate soars to record levels as more illegal aliens have entered the country then in any previous year.
Making it woke (who doesn't remember and love the transsexual character from the original?) alienates the majority of older people who might actually plop down money for this turd burger, and about half of the rest of the country. By including the not-in-the-original trans character, the film was immediately rendered banned in much of the Middle East (although it's hard to believe it'd do any better there than the rest of the world).
Spielberg told a reported that there are no English subtitles when Spanish is being spoken because he “respects the language” and did not want to give “English the power over the Spanish," whatever that's supposed to mean. He also cut all the dancing numbers, because reasons.
Thus it's no surprise that WEST SIDE STORY is a mega-bomb, earning only $10 million domestically, and $4 in the rest of the world (with little hope to do much better with later releases). At a reported cost of $100 million, plus perhaps that much in ads, it's one of the biggest bombs of the year and of Spielberg's career ("1941" even made money).
So it's a another disappointment for Spielberg, who hasn't had a true hit since the last INDIANA JONES back in 2008 and yet more proof that Hollywood seems completely content to kill itself to prove a dubious point.

Well, tranvestism is indeed mentioned in the original's "Officer Krupke" song, but more in line with being an obvious form of degeneracy possibly resulting from family and overall societal dysfunction along with juvenile violence and other forms of delinquency:These irony-laden, boundary-pushing lyrics portraying wise-ass teenage tomfoolery penned by Stephen Sondheim in 1957 were part of a type of pop culture that influenced older Boomers when they themselves were adolescents, particularly other Jewish guys like Steven Spielberg and Larry David, though it's doubtful they'll be completely tolerated in Spielberg's own 21st century deconstruction of this mid-20th century cultural object. It's bound to be yet another step in " Anything Goes" as gender-bending is today clearly seen as a holy sacrament whereas in the fifties it could only be presented in the context of aberrant behavior and societal decay even if from within a tongue-in-cheek context. Yet the edgy elements of this song were entertainingly portrayed for millions of people outside the concrete jungles who might have been unfamiliar with such things along with a clever though thinly disguised profanity that perhaps might have gone over the heads of squares who weren't quite hip or at least felt clever and a little naughty to Boomer kids in the know like Larry David who were actually living in boroughs like Brooklyn:

I can hear the whirring of tree chippers in the distance.
Soon my brethren, soon.

I had no idea they green lit a new show for the 3 witches from MACBETH.

I had no idea they green lit a new show for the 3 witches from MACBETH. Two of them are looking at the third like; how are you looking 20 years younger than us?

And it gets worse: "All hope for Steven Spielberg’s racially divisive West Side Story remake died in week two, plummeting 68 percent with a humiliating take of just $3.4 million. After ten days in release, which includes two weekends, this historic box office bomb has grossed just $17.9 million." ------------------------------------ Which means it's the biggest flop of his career. As in worse than ALWAYS.
Contrast this to the latest SPIDERMAN flick (a movie which was decidedly not woke) which will make something like $250 million in one weekend, and the scale of the disaster is clear.
To make it even worse, the studio amped it's ad campaign during last week, meaning it will lose even more money.
But hey, keep re-making movies that don't need to be re-made and keeping making them woke. My schadenfreude is strong. www.breitbart.com/entertainment/2021/12/19/nolte-spielbergs-woke-side-story-dives-68-at-box-office-in-week-two/

WEST SIDE STORY somehow managed to make less money than CATS, grossing less than $53 million after 3 weeks in release. CATS grossed $73 mil. Which means this turd didn't even earn back the money for commercials, much less the film itself. By way of comparison, SPIDERMAN: NO WAY HOME has grossed $1.3 BILLION in 1 less week of release. That's billion with a "B". Which is another huge indicator that the '50's era film in no way needed a re-make, much less a woke version without dances or sub-titles. It should also be noted that SPIDERMAN was remarkably un-woke. www.breitbart.com/entertainment/2022/01/03/nolte-spielbergs-west-side-story-is-a-bigger-flop-than-cats/
